Celebrating Our 15th Season|
Unforgettable Big Band turns 15 in 2015, and we are bringing the swing like never before. Based in York, Pennsylvania, Unforgettable has become one of the region's best known and most liked bands, performing the great music of the swing era through modern day favorites.
Unforgettable covers many of the great and
lasting songs of the swing era, including arrangements by Glenn Miller,
Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Duke
Ellington, Count Basie, and more. Our performances also feature works of more contemporary big band arrangers such as Gordon Goodwin, and we don't hesitate to step outside the box to perform songs made famous by modern artists like Queen or Carlos Santana. We also have an assortment of
outstanding big band arrangements of gospel standards that are suitable
for a worship service, or a performance.
Unforgettable is a community service oriented group of musicians. It is our desire to give back to the generations that have paved the way before us.
The band is available for parties, receptions, special events and corporate functions, in addition to traditional dance and concert engagements. We endeavor to accommodate worthy fund raising efforts, as well.
Currently organized as a non-profit corporation, Unforgettable Big Band is dedicated to continuing the American big band tradition.

| Unforgettable Pays Tribute to Doris Day|
Though Tonia Grubb and Lindy Mack grew up on different sides of the country (she in Dover, PA, and he in the San Francisco Bay area), they both shared the same dream of performing in a big band. Years later, as members of Unforgettable Big Band of York, PA, they are both living their dreams as keyboardist and assistant director (Mack) and female vocalist (Grubb).|
Before moving to Mechanicsburg, Mack studied big band arranging under Lyle Bardo, who worked with Merv Griffin during the 1940s while serving as the orchestra leader for the San Francisco Sketchbook radio program on KFRC. Grubb, who has been singing and perfecting tunes from the American Songbook since childhood, has worked in local theatre and also written various song melodies and lyrics for personal enjoyment. When the two were paired together, the end result was an original big band style piece: (Brighten Up Your Day With A Little) Doris Day.
The lyrics tell the story of how Grubb was introduced to the film Calamity Jane as a child, after which she becomes a life-long Doris Day fan and, inspired by Ms. Day, eventually ends up singing in a show as an adult. Grubb penned the original lyrics and melody in 2012, after doing the feature show with Unforgettable at the Les Brown Centennial Festival, where a personal letter from Ms. Day was read. She later teamed up with Mack for a big band arrangement. This 17-piece score carries all the sweetness and purity that characterizes Ms. Day, and excerpts from some of her best-known tunes make up a charming instrumental medley toward the middle of the piece.
Unforgettable introduced the song in 2014 under direction of Thomas McLaughlin, in celebration of Ms. Day’s 90th year. Now, in the countdown to her 91st, the song’s authors are making their music available online. They hope that big bands and other musicians throughout the country will acquire these pieces and join this celebration of the Doris Day legacy. (And for those who prefer listening to music, the digital audio recording of Doris Day is set to release on her 91st birthday and will also be included on Unforgettable’s 15th Anniversary CD, coming later in the summer.)
The score and parts for the big band arrangement are currently available online as digital print sheet music from Sheet Music Plus for advanced intermediate jazz ensemble. (Sheet Music Plus)
Countdown to Doris Day’s 91st:
- Big band arrangement (on SheetMusicPlus.com) – AVAILABLE NOW
- Piano/vocal sheet music (on SheetMusicPlus.com) – AVAILABLE NOW
- Digital audio recording by Unforgettable (on CDBaby.com) – AVAILABLE NOW and will be featured on Unforgettable’s 15th Anniversary CD, coming late summer
Unforgettable Big Band, along with Ms. Grubb will perform (Brighten Up Your Day With A Little) Doris Day at a special tribute/birthday celebration on April 3 in conjunction with the band's season opening performance at Elks Lodge #213 in York, PA. Admission is just $10.00, and tickets may be ordered through the Elks Lodge at (717) 848-2785, or by contacting Barb Shepp (firstname.lastname@example.org).
